Historical Context: Why Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots Are Separated and the Situation Nowadays
The separation between Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots dates back to the island’s complex history under British rule. The Republic of Cyprus, nestled in the Mediterranean Sea, has long been marked by ethnic tensions between the Greek Cypriot majority and the Turkish Cypriot minority. Following Cyprus’s independence from British rule in 1960 and subsequent intercommunal violence, the situation escalated dramatically when the Greek Cypriots tried to take away the rights of the Turkish Cyprus representatives. As a consequence, in 1974, a coup by the Greek Cypriot National Guard aimed at uniting the island with Greece prompted Turkey to deploy Turkish troops to protect the Turkish Cypriot community, leading to the division of the island.
Today, the northern half is predominantly inhabited by Turkish Cypriots and Turkish settlers, while the southern part remains under the control of the Greek Cypriot majority. This division has left the entire island with two distinct cultures, languages, and political systems, despite its shared natural beauty and history. Efforts to reunify the island have faced numerous challenges, but both communities continue to live side by side, with Cyprus Greek and Turkish as widely spoken two official languages.
